Background:
A delivery truck driver recently succumbed to cardiac arrest in a workplace. Medical investigations revealed that cardiac arrest was triggered by a condition known as Occupational Pulmonary Embolism.
What is Pulmonary Embolism?
A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot obstructs and halts blood flow to an artery in the lung. Typically, the blood clot originates in a deep vein in the leg and migrates to the lung. While it can be life-threatening, timely treatment significantly lowers the risk of death.
Occupational Pulmonary Embolism:
Occupational Pulmonary Embolism is a silent threat on the roads, predominantly affecting long-distance drivers who remain seated for extended periods.
What are the Common Causes of Pulmonary Embolism?
The primary cause of pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that detaches and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs. This clot typically originates from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the leg. Less common causes include fat embolus (often associated with the fracture of a large bone), amniotic fluid embolus, air bubbles, and fragments of a tumor.
Occupations Affected?
Basically, to those sitting continuously for a long time:
- Long journey routine drivers,
- Equipment/ machinery operators,
- Control room operators,
- Office staff those continuously sit for a long period, etc.
Recommendation to minimize Pulmonary Embolism:
- Take regular breaks in between from continuous sitting,
- Practice stretching exercises such as yoga,
- Set timer/ reminder to stand up from the seat at regular intervals,
- Wear loose/ comfortable clothes,
- Daily stretching and walking are a must for those exposed to Pulmonary Embolism,
- Display stretching posters at workstations,
- Increase awareness about Pulmonary Embolism, etc.
